Teaching Civility, Compassion, and Courage in Schools

Series Description
This workshop is based on the book, Civility, Compassion, and Courage in Schools Today. Strategies for Implement in K-12 Classrooms, written by Drs. Kohler-Evans and Barnes.  The book has been recognized by the National Civility Center as a key resource for their Civility in Schools toolkit. It also supports components of teacher evaluation systems that address the Planning & Instruction, and Classroom Environment Domains. More importantly the workshop series is designed so that teachers, leaders, and other school personnel leave the session with lesson plans, activities, and ideas on teaching civility, compassion and courageous to their students.

Teaching Students to Be Civil, Compassionate, and Courageous Risk-Takers

Presentation Description:
Using the authors’ “Model of Influence,” a four level hierarchy, they suggest that students can and need to be taught to be more civil, compassionate, and courageous, even when facing adversity. Students can then move from developing a consciousness about these attributes to embracing influence and taking bold action. The presentation engages participants in discussions, reflections, and the development of activities using project-based and service earning to teach each attribute.

Influence and Action: Connecting the 3C’s to the Home and Community

Presentation Description:
This presentation focuses on creating the bridge between families, school and communities, by specifically focusing on schools revisiting and strengthening their role as influencers of change in communities. Thus, creating a climate to support the respect of people, property, and personhood both in and outside of the school. Service-learning and project-based learning are used to provide example ideas, resources, and learning to serve projects and organizations.

The complete series comes with the book Civility, Compassion, and Courage in Schools Today. Strategies for Implement in K-12 Classroom.
